"Aktion Eichhörnchen"

Descripción	The Squirrel Forest Campaign ("Aktion Eichhörnchen") gives primary school children the opportunity to literally get hands-on experience of woodlands and the topic of reforestation by inviting them to embark on a mini woodland adventure. The campaign sees playing as a learning activity. The children collect tree “seeds” like acorns or beechnuts and “sow” these on a site which is “in need of repair” (designated for reforestation). In this way the children’s own new, natural seeded forest is created. This is a forest which as well as soaking up harmful carbon dioxide in the future will also instil a sense of self-esteem and the realization that someone SMALL can create something BIG! The organization WaldSaat e.V. (i.Gr.), which was founded on 01.08.2008 in Frankfurt/Main (Germany) works towards promoting an awareness that reforestation - preferably through seeding - is one of today’s most important issues. The organization also aims to widely publicize the Squirrel Forest Campaign which was first launched and successfully put into action by government forest officer Dietmar Gottfriedsen in 1998 in Schleswig-Holstein (about 10,000 participants to date) and to start many more such projects in other regions.
	Die "Aktion Eichhörnchen" bringt Kinder im Grundschulalter mit dem Thema Wald sprichwörtlich in "Berührung", indem sie diese zu einem kleinen Waldabenteuer einlädt. Hierbei sammeln die Kinder in spielerischem Rahmen Baumsamen wie Eicheln oder Bucheckern, und säen diese auf einer erneuerungsbedürftigen Fläche wieder aus. So enststeht ein selbstgemachter, neuer natürlicher Saatwald, der neben seiner zukünftig erheblich gesteigerten CO2-Aufnahme den Kindern bewusst macht, dass auch sie als "Kleine" etwas "Großes" schaffen können. Der am 1.08.2008 in Frankfurt/M. gegründete Verein WaldSaat e.V. (i.Gr.) hat es sich zur Aufgabe gemacht, das Bewusstsein zu fördern, dass die Neuwaldbildung - am besten durch Waldsaat - ein wichtiges Anliegen unserer Zeit ist. Weiter will er die von Staatsförster D. Gottfriedsen erfundene und 1998 zum ersten Mal in Schleswig-Holstein durchgeführte Aktion (bis heute ca. 10.000 Teilnehmer) einer breiten Öffentlichkeit bekannt machen, sowie viele weitere Aktionen in anderen Regionen initiieren und fördern.

	Das Bundesministerium für Ernährung, Landwirtschaft und Verbraucherschutz hat in Zusammenarbeit mit Vertretern der Forst- und Holzwirtschaft im Jahre 2004 die Charta für Holz ins Leben gerufen und Maßnahmen sowie Zielstellungen für die Zukunft formuliert. Ziel der Charta ist es, den Rohstoff Holz in seiner Nutzungsvielfalt voranzubringen und seine Position auf dem Rohstoffmarkt zu stärken. Mit der Durchführung einer bundesweiten Clusterstudie zur Analyse der Forst- und Holzwirtschaft hat die Ressortforschung des BMELV einen wichtigen Beitrag zur Charta geleistet, den es nun gilt auszuwerten. Die genaue Kenntnis über Strukturen und Entwicklungen des Holzmarktes soll es ermöglichen, die Stärken der Forst- und Holzwirtschaft weiter auszubauen und Schwächen gezielt zu überwinden. Bei dem Symposium „Holz – Rohstoff mit Zukunft“ wird die Diskussion um den Rohstoff Holz weitergeführt und zukünftige Potenziale aufgezeigt. Hierzu werden Vertreter betroffenerVerbände mit Ihnen die Entwicklungschancen diskutieren.

Descripción	"Waldaktie" is an innovative idea in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: Tourists are given the opportunity of compensating the carbon dioxide emissions caused by their holiday activities by donating for new "climate forests". They are given the chance to participate in planting actions to see the new forests grow. New participants are invited to join and become a "Waldaktionär" (meaning "forest stock owner"). The forest are owned by the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Meeting Point: 13 o´clock at the climate forest close to Koserow.

Im Rahmen der Aktion „Waldaktie“ wird allen aktuellen und zukünftigen „Waldaktionären“ die Möglichkeit gegeben, etwas für das Klima zu tun und selbst Hand anzulegen: Deutschlands erster „Klimawald“ entsteht. Descripción	Governing Council Meeting 2008 of the Union of European Foresters. The meeting will be arranged 16th – 19th of October 2008 in Gmunden, Austria. The keynote presentation and excursion part of the meeting will be "Wood and Energy – New possibilities?" (what are the European issues? ; what are the potentials of wood biomass?) This event is one contribution Austrias for the European Forest Week 2008
	Jahrestagung der Union Europäischer Forstleute vom 16. bis 19. Oktober 2008 in Gmunden Ein Höhepunkt im Jahr 2008 ist sicherlich die Abhaltung der diesjährigen Jahrestagung der Union Europäischer Forstleute . Ca. 40 bis 70 Personen aus 18 internationalen Försterorganisationen werden dazu erwartet. Interessenten und Interessentinnen aus der Försterschaft sind dazu, recht herzlich eingeladen. Die Tagungssprache ist Englisch. Das Tagungsthema lautet: „Holz und Energie – neue Möglichkeiten“. Die Tagung beginnt am Donnerstag, dem 16. Oktober 2008 um 13.30 Uhr (großer Saal Neubau – FASt Ort). Geplant ist neben dem fachlichen Programm auch ein Kulturprogramm. Von 16.00 bis 22.00 Uhr findet eine Exkursion zum Almsee im Almtal, mit einem Abendessen und Zimmergewehrschießen beim „Jagasimmerl“ statt. Für 17. Oktober 2008 ist, nach der UEF-Vollversammlung (geschlossene Veranstaltung), von 17.00 – 18.30 Uhr der Besuch der OÖ. - Landesausstellung 2008 (Land- und Seeschloss Ort) geplant. Um 19.00 Uhr ist ein Abendessen im barocken Festsaal der FASt Ort mit musikalischer Darbietung und Verkostung von Oggauer Weinen geplant. Den Abschluss bildet am 18. Oktober 2008 (9.00 – 18.00 Uhr) eine Exkursion zum Tagungsthema in den Raum Amstetten. Abends ist, sozusagen als Abschluss der Veranstaltung, in der FASt Ort (ab 19.30 Uhr) ein Empfang auf Einladung des Herrn Bundesministers DI Josef Pröll geplant. Dies wäre dann auch ein Beitrag zum Auftakt Österreichs anlässlich der Europäischen Waldwoche vom 20. – 24. Oktober 2008. Als Damenprogramm ist für 16. Okt. 2008 (Nachmittag) die Besichtigung der Stadt Gmunden und für 17. Okt. 2008 (ganztags) eine Fahrt nach Salzburg vorgesehen. 10th anniversary of forest association Weilhart

Descripción	The forest association Weilhart (WWGW) has been founded in 1998 by a couple of enthusiastic forest owners. In the meantime 100 members have joined the association. Main objects of the association are: • Near natural forestry • Preservation of natural revegetation by controlling game life stocks • Close cooperation with university in fields of revegetation of natural tree species • FSC certification • Training and education of forest owners • Marketing of forest products • Biomass fuel supply for district heating “microgrids” The WWGW is the only border crossing forest association in Austria and the only border crossing FSC-certified forest owner group world-wide. There were various undertakings organized by the WWGW in the past, e.g.: • A big oak tree planting research program • At least one regional forest based event a year since its foundation The 10th anniversary will be split into two parts: • A “forest road show” will be held within the forests of WWGW members o Mechanized harvesting o Hunting law restrictions by legal authority act o Wood chippers o Automatic fuel wood production o District wood chips heating system o Forest work safety and health o Timber supply rules • Presentations and discussion of recent topics and challenges

	EVROPSKA NEDJELJA ŠUMA 20 – 24. oktobar 2008. Evropska nedjelja šuma 2008. naglašava doprinos evropskih šuma pri ublažavanju klimatskih promjena, drvnim resursom i obnovljivom energijom, osiguravanju zaliha pitke vode i zaštiti naše životne sredine. Svjetski dan šuma je prvi dan proljeća, međutim na 5. Ministarskoj konferenciji o zaštiti šuma u Europi „Šume za kvalitetu života“ koja se održala od 5. do 7. studenog 2007. godine u Varšavi, ministri odgovorni za šume iz 46 evropskih zemalja proglasili su nedjelju od 20. do 24. oktobra 2008. godine Evropskom nedjeljom šuma, te su ga zajednički organizovali Evropska komisija, Organizacija Ujedinjenih nacija za poljoprivredu i hranu (FAO), Ministarska konferencija o zaštiti šuma u Europi (MCPFE) i Evropska ekonomska komisija Ujedinjenih nacija (UNECE) u bliskoj saradnji sa Predsjedništvom Vijeća Evropske Unije - Francuskom. Evropski nedjelja šuma bit će okosnica nizu manifestacija u Evropi. Na regionalnoj razini, nedjelja će biti obilježena u Rimu i Bruxellesu, a niz događaja na nacionalnoj i lokalnoj razini održat će se u zemljama širom Evrope. U Rimu će se održati niz sastanaka na kojima će učestvovati gore navedene organizacije i ostali evropski partneri iz šumarskog sektora. Događanja u Rimu okupiti će stotine pojedinaca predstavnika vladinih institucija, nevladinih organizacija, istraživačkih instituta, regionalnih i međunarodnih mreža, agencija UN-a i privatnog sektora. Prisustvovati će i predstavnici srednjeg i višeg managementa šumarskog i drugih srodnih sektora iz svih dijelova Evrope. Ovi sastanci će pružiti jedinstvenu priliku da različiti učesnici i šumarski stručnjaci razmijene svoja gledišta i potraže rješenja za neke od najvećih izazova s kojima se danas suočavaju šume i šumarstvo, a to su klimatske promjene, energija i voda. Vezano na događanja u Rimu, u Brusselesu će se 20. oktobra 2008. g. održati sastanci na visokom nivou. Ciljevi Ciljevi Evropska nedjelja šuma su: - naglasiti značaj šuma i šumarskog sektora i njihovog doprinosa razvoju evropskog gospodarstva i društva - podići javnu svijest o važnom doprinosu šuma pri ublažavanju klimatskih promjena, snabdijevanje pitkom vodom i zaštiti životne sredine - uključiti druge sektore u zajednički dijalog o pitanjima vezanima za šume Glavne poruke Evropske šume obogaćuju naše živote i pomažu spašavanju planete. • šume pokrivaju 44% evropskog kopna i nastavljaju se širiti • šume se bore protiv klimatskih promjena kontinuiranim upijanjem i skladištenjem opasnih stakleničkih gasova • u današnjoj promijenjenoj klimi, drvo, naš najstariji obnovljivi izvor materijala i energije, još uvijek je pametan izbor, čak i u 21. vijeku • Evropska nedjelja šuma ima za cilj poboljšati razumijevanje važnosti naših šuma i vrijednosti njihovog korištenja Površina šuma u Evropi povećala se za 13 miliona hektara u zadnjih 15 godina. To je površina otprilike jednaka veličini Grčke – ili više od milion fudbalskih igrališta svake godine. Šume kojima se održivo upravlja obogaćuju naše živote i životnu sredinu na mnogo načina. One stabilizuju naša zemljišta, pružaju stanište našem biljnom i životinjskom svijetu, pročišćuju naš vazduh i vodu, vežu stakleničke gasove, stvaraju prihod i radna mjesta i pružaju nam zdrav prostor za odmor i igru. Održivo upravljanje šumama znači korištenje šumama bez da ih se umanjuje. Evropske šume istovremeno proizvode sve veće količine obnovljive i pouzdane sirovine za gradnju, namještaj, energiju, papir i nebrojene druge svakodnevne upotrebe. Drvna zaliha u Evropskim šumama raste za oko 360 milijona m3 godišnje, dok se trenutno siječe samo dvije trećine tog iznosa. Evropske šume se bore protiv klimatskih promjena Putem fotosinteze, drveće uklanja CO2 iz atmosfere. Ugljendioksid se skladišti u šumskoj biomasi - u trupcima, granama, lišću i korijenju, te u tlu. U šumi kojom se održivo upravlja skladištenje ugljendioksida nikada ne prestaje zbog kontinuirane obnove područja na kojima je izvršena sječa. Čak i nakon što se drvo posiječe, drvni proizvodi nastavljaju skladištiti ugljendioksid. Drvo je također izvor energije sa niskom emisijom ugljendioksida – bolje je za planetu nego korištenje fosilnih goriva. Drvo je pametan izbor Drvo je prirodan, obnovljiv resurs. Trebamo ga više koristiti za energiju i u zamjenu za druge, prema životnoj sredini štetnije materijale. Za proizvodnju drveta potrebno je manje energije i emitira se manje CO2 nego za proizvodnju bilo kojeg drugog široko korištenog građevinskog materijala – a drvo skladišti ugljendioksid toliko dugo koliko postoji građevina. Korištenje više drveta umjesto betona, plastike i čelika moglo bi postići značajan pad u emisijama stakleničkih gasova. Zamjenom 1 m3 betona sa istom zapreminom drveta može se uštedjeti oko 1 tona CO2 ispuštenog u atmosferu. To je otprilike količina CO2 koju ispusti prosječno putničko vozilo nakon što pređe 3 000 km. Nadalje, drvo i drvni proizvodi su jednostavni za ponovnu upotrebu i reciklažu. Sve evropske zemlje su pozvane da na nacionalnom nivou, a u skladu sa ciljevima "Nedelje šuma", organizuju skupove posvećene problematici šuma i šumarstva. Ovo mogu biti konferencije, forumi, javna dešavanja kao što su šumarski sajmovi, šetnje prirodom i izložbe, simbolična dešavanja kao što je sadnja drveća, medijska dešavanja usmjerena ka unapređenju komunikacije. "Nedelji šuma" posvećen je i WEB sajt (www.EuropeanForestWeek.org) na kome se mogu pronaći informacije o proslavi na nacionalnom i regionalnom nivou. Akcija jesenjeg pošumljavanja NVO “EKO-Leonardo” U našoj zemlji institucije nisu posvetile dovoljno pažnje ovakvim i sličnim nastojanjima savremenog svijeta. Udruženje građana “EKO-Leonardo” iz Priboja, u saradnji sa eko-sekcijama osnovnih i srednjih škola, počinje sa akcijom pošumljavanja krajem meseca oktobra. U ovoj kampanji očekuje se podrška i partnerskih organizacija. U cilju edukacije mladih i podizanja nivoa svijesti o značaju šuma, naši volonteri će održati predavanja u osnovnim i srednjim školama, podijeliti propagandni materijal („KLIMATSKE PROMJENE I ŠUME“) i plakate „Molitva šume“. Jesenja sadnja biljaka će se izvršiti sadnicama četinara : bijeli i crni bor, smrča, jela i sadnicama lišćara: hrasta, bagrema, lipe, javora i jasena. Za pošumljavanja u 2008. godini, JP “Šume Srpske“, Centar za sjemenarsko-rasadničku proizvodnju donirali su 35.000 komada sadnica u proljetnjoj kampanji 2008. U jesenjoj akciji pošumljavanja obezbedit će se još 10.000 komada sadnica, od čega 3.000 komada za sadnju na devastiranom državnom zemljištu i 7.000 komada na privatnim površinama. Akcija će se organizovati u okviru EVROPSKE NEDJELJE ŠUMA na području šumskog gazdinstva “Majevica“ Lopare, u cilju povećanja šumovitosti i realizacije prostornog plana Republike Srpske, kampanje “LJEPŠA SRPSKA”, kao i UNEP-ove kampanje “ZA NOVA PLUĆA ZEMLJE”.

Descripción	The Faculty of Forestry of the University of Zagreb celebrates it’s 110th anniversary in 2008. On 20 October 1898, the Forestry Academy was founded as part of the Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Zagreb. In 1948, the Wood Science and Technology Department was founded at the Faculty of Forestry, and it now celebrates its first 60 years of educating experts needed for the development of wood processing and furniture manufacturing in Croatia. The Faculty of Forestry of the University of Zagreb, on the occasion of celebrating these major anniversaries, is holding an international scientific conference under the title Challenges in Forestry and Wood Technology in the 21st century. Invited papers at the conference will be presented by forestry and wood technology experts, professors at Faculties of Forestry from several European countries and the United States of America.

Descripción	The seminar will offer the opportunity to exchange experiences and share information on the state of the art of knowledge for the improvement of forestry infrastructure, its maintenance and use in view of new trends in forest harvesting and wood transport. The objective of the seminar is to provide an international forum for presentations related to the subject matter and to connect advanced scientific methods and modern information technologies with practical engineering and field operations through paper and poster sessions, field excursions and direct contacts among participants, who are supposed to then share their knowledge and information with colleagues in their home countries. The meeting is also intended to become a “twelve-years-after” event of the FAO/ECE/ILO Seminar on Environmentally Sound Road Construction and Wood Transport, held in 1996 in Sinaia – Romania, in particular considering and assessing major opportunities and developments of the sector, which have taken place since then. Although the technical aspects of road construction may not have entirely changed, the role of forests and forestry has. The concept of sustainable forest management has been promoted in many countries, the threat of climate change has become a global concern and the renaissance of the utilization of wood for energy can be witnessed. Forest products and services have regained importance on global markets, and forestry administrations, forest companies and managers are streamlining their companies and operations so as to remain competitive. Keynote speakers will try to assess developments made over the last twelve years and describe expected trends in specific areas. Participants will have the opportunity to report on their recent experiences in forestry infrastructure construction, maintenance and use, on advancements in wood transport technologies and logistics and on improved investment practices and related current legal requirements. It is expected that the workshop will provide the sector with sound conclusions and recommendations that will be of particular importance for those countries where infrastructure still needs sound development and where the wood based industry is heavily challenged by the requirements of a globally operating economy. The output of the seminar should also give guidance to forest owners and investors engaged in the sector. The seminar is aimed at foresters involved in developing, planning and executing forest operations and management in the field, but also at those engaged in teaching, training and extension work and in administrative and policy advisory services: 􀂃 Forest engineers and wood transport experts, 􀂃 Forest operations managers, 􀂃 Representatives of private and public forest enterprises, 􀂃 Officials of forest services and administrations, 􀂃 Scientists, teachers and trainers from universities, forestry schools, vocational training and extension centres, 􀂃 Representatives of non-governmental organisations, forestry associations and forest contractors, 􀂃 Representatives of decision-making bodies.

Descripción	French Forest Cooperatives Federation (Union de Coopération Forestière Française) is organising the first European Forest Cooperatives Seminar, which will take place on September, 25th, 26th, and 27th 2008 at the COMPIEGNE Royal Castle (75 km North of Paris). This large scale event will gather for the first time all European Forest Owners Cooperatives board members and managers, and many distinguished guests coming from political and professional fields, interested in the wood and forest sector and in the renewable energy sector. This meeting'aim is to lay down the foundations of a European Forest Cooperatives network. Thus, this event is an important step in the collaboration between European Cooperatives, which will open new opportunities for all of us. This Seminar is composed of 3 parts : - A private part (25th) dedicated to the european forest cooperatives board members and managers. It's above all a professional meeting to set up tools in order to face up to the wood and forest sector's coming challenges : WOOD MOBILISATION AND SUPPLY, for material as well as for energy sector. - A public part (26th) which prioritises the following items : - PUBLIC DECLARATION FOR WOOD MOBILISATION IN EUROPE - General Assembly and debates, especially dedicated to : " WOOD SUPPLY : THE EUROPEAN CHALLENGES" - An incentive and team building part (27th)which will gather employees and managers of the forest cooperatives. This large-scale event will be an exceptional opportunity to communicate the wood and forest messages, especially concerning sustainable development, industrial results and renewable energy development.

Descripción	« A l’école de la Forêt » is a joint program between two French Ministries : Ministry of Agriculture and Ministry of Education. Since 1990, the main objective of this program is to promote forest as an educational medium for sustainable development education. The forest allows numerous different approaches (technical, scientific, economic, cultural or artistic) and is related to many parts of the school programs. A label is associated to selected projects. It is a visible quality sign and allows technical aid. A national team decides the main goals of the program. Regional committees are composed with forest workers and representatives of Ministry of Education. They aim at selecting projects. Local units, national institutions related to forest, associations and colleges can be implicated in the projects.

Stand d'information et de discussion sur la forêt/Information and discussion booth on the street

Descripción	Students from AgroParisTech - ENGREF, members of IFSA France, will present posters about forest issues (such as forest management, sylviculture...) and about the forest education in France. Students will also offer the youngest people some play activities. The booth will be held during lunch time an in the late afternoon. On saturday students will be present during the whole afternoon.
	Des étudiants de l'école AgroParisTech - ENGREF de Nancy, membres de l'association IFSA France, tiendront un stand sur une place de Nancy pour présenter des posters sur des problématiques forestières (aménagement forestier, sylviculture...), les posters présenteront également l'éducation forestière en France. Les étudiants seront là pour répondre à vos questions, pour mieux faire connaître la forêt et engager le débat sur ses questions. Des activités ludiques seront également proposées aux enfants. Le stand sera tenu de 12h à 14h et de 16h30 à 18h ainsi que samedi pendant toute l'après-midi.

Descripción	French Forest and Tourism Network Association (Forestour) organizes the 5th "Forum of private forests open to public" on October 24th 2008 at the 'Centre forestier', La Bastide des Jourdans, France. In an attempt to reach a permanent and thoughtful dialogue about the issues of tourism in forests and sustainable forest management, Forestour invites to this professional meeting Private forest owners, Forest organisations and administrations members and Professionals from the forest, environment and tourism sectors. It will deal with the issue of the “added value” of tourism in forests and sustainable forest management. There will be discussions on interests and conditions to implement sustainable development, applied in particular to the various functions of forests: wood production, tourism, and environmental protection (mainly through carbon plantations). This Forum will be the occasion to think together, to discuss, to present many forest owner and manager experiences and to exchange visions of sustainable forest management and tourism in forests.
	L'association Forêt Réseau Tourisme (Forestour) organise pour la cinquième année consécutive le "Forum de la Forêt Privée ouverte au Public" le 24 Octobre 2008 au Centre de formations forestières de La Bastide des Jourdans, dans le Vaucluse. Dans une démarche de réflexion globale et de concertation autour de l’accueil du public et de la gestion durable des forêts, Forestour invite à cette journée d’échanges les propriétaires forestiers et tous les acteurs de la forêt, de l’environnement et du tourisme. Nous posons la question de la "valeur ajoutée" de l'accueil du public et de la gestion durable de nos forêts. Il s'agit de débattre ensemble de l’intérêt et des conditions de mise en oeuvre de la gestion durable, appliquée notamment aux différentes fonctions de la forêt : production de bois, accueil du public, et protection de l’environnement (à travers notamment des plantations-puits de carbone). Ce Forum sera l'occasion de réfléchir, discuter, témoigner d'expériences de propriétaires et gestionnaires de forêts et d'échanger les visions de la gestion durable de la forêt et de l'accueil du public en forêt.

Descripción	The regional natural reserves constitute an irreplaceable form of conservation and valorization of the habitats and the species animals and more representative vegetables of the Lombardy. A particular space will be dedicated to the actions undertaken in the forest management.
	La Riserva Naturale regionale SIC di Monticchie ospita il 2° Convegno sulle Riserve Naturali, promosso dalla Regione Lombardia in collaborazione col Comune di Somaglia. Le Riserve Naturali costituiscono nel loro insieme una insostituibile forma di conservazione e valorizzazione degli habitat e delle specie animali e vegetali più rappresentative della Lombardia. L’attività di conservazione e le esperienze di gestione condotte in 25 anni di attività rappresentano una significativa base di confronto e di riflessione per migliorare e rendere più efficace l’azione di conservazione e di mantenimento degli ecosistemi. L’estendersi di opere di forestazione urbana, periurbana ed extraurbana nel territorio planiziale rende urgente la necessità di affrontare sotto i diversi aspetti il tema della gestione di questi nuovi boschi. Nel pomeriggio, partendo dall’esperienza realizzata nella vicina nuova foresta Carpaneta, il tema gestionale si focalizzerà sulla farnia, essenza simbolo dei boschi planiziali padani.

Forest Days 2008: the Central Event

Descripción	This year we celebrated Forest Days’ anniversary - 80 years since the first Forest Days were organized in Latvia, town Varaklani in 1928. On this occasion Minister of Agriculture Mr.Martins Roze together with forest sector leaders planted lime-trees in the park of town Varaklani. The Event in the park of Varaklani Manor-house included various activities all day long: creativity workshops offering to learn about forest in colours, sounds and feelings; a fair, an exhibition on history of the Forest Days, a presentation of a book on history of the Forest Days, performances of Madona city brass band and other vocational musicians, and in the evening - closing concert in the square of Manor-house park. First time during Forest Days more than 500 forest sector representatives gathered to take part in a big forest plantation in a forest nearby town Varaklani. In the framework of Forest Days during March, April and May, 2008 there have been more than 400 forest related activities organized involving several thousands of citizens – pupils, students, nature photographers, birdwatchers, hunters, fishermen, artists etc. A number of different events were organized by State forest service, JSC "Latvijas valsts meži", Ltd. „Rīgas meži”, the Latvian Association of Local and Regional Governments, Latvia University of Agriculture, Forest faculty, Latvian Forest Industry Federation, Latvian Forest Owners’ Association etc. Every year during Forest Days in all the regions of Latvia there are planted trees, cleaned up forests, placed bird-cages, put in order famous sites of heritage value, organized different competitions for schools, given lectures and organized seminars on forestry and forest protection issues, created new and cleaned up existing recreation sites, and organized many more activities. Activities of Forest Days 2008 took place in all regions of Latvia including the capital city – Riga. Forest Days 2008 were coordinated by the Ministry of Agriculture.

Social advertising campaign on role of wood in climate change mitigation in mass media

Descripción	The goal of the informative and educational event is to raise society’s and decision-makers’ awareness to issues related to climate change and enhance knowledge and understanding on forest and wood products role in removing CO2 and climate change mitigation, importance of wood as natural and renewable resource in sustainable construction and creation of healthy living space. During October environmental objects of wood will be placed in parks of Riga. During October 20-24, 2008 will be presentated results of sociology study „Public opinion on importance of climate change and choice of material” and provided information to media on forest and wood products role in removing CO2. In Saeima is planned formal opening of book „Tackle climate change: use wood” in the Latvian language and Informative photo exhibition on unfavorable climate changes in the world and role of wood in removing CO2 and climate change mitigation.

Forest Academy for Decision Makers

Descripción	This is going to be the first Forest Academy forum in Latvia. The topics to be discussed in the first forum are related to the current financial situation both globally and nationally. The forum will discuss the global process developments and their effects on economy in general and particularly on Latvian forest sector and the related challenges. The participants of the first forum will be from the state and private sector, non-governmental organizations, media and others. The purpose of the Forest Academy for Decision-Makers is to inspire and equip Latvian decision-makers to use the opportunities offered by forests for developing our society. The Forest Academy provides key actors from various fields with a forum where they will be able to obtain information, create new contacts and gain a deeper insight into the challenges and opportunities of our forest-based well-being. Year 2008 is the first year for the Forest Academy in Latvia. It is being developed in cooperation with the Finnish Forest Association.

ICF National Study Tour: Greenproofing Landscapes - People, Trees and Places

International conference “Recreation and Health in Landscape and Forest”

Descripción	Urbanisation is leading to a densification of cities in many European countries with an associated loss of natural areas. Urban areas are known to foster a sedentary lifestyle and to increase the need for restoration. Mental stress and obesity are some of the consequences of these developments, which put health at risk and lead to an increase in the occurrence of illnesses such as depression, diabetes and hypertonia. Preventive medicine and health promotion actions are actively undertaken to prevent illnesses and to foster public health. At the same time, different landscapes, e.g. forests, provide many opportunities to improve the quality of life of large parts of society and to reduce the consequences of the mentioned trends. The aim of the conference is to bring scientists and practitioners together and to encourage a dialog between the health, landscape, and forest related sciences in Switzerland and in Europe.
	Conférence internationale: "Santé et détente dans le paysage et la forêt" du 1er au 3 avril 2009 à Birmensdorf en Suisse. Dans de nombreux pays européens, l’urbanisation conduit à une densification des villes et à une raréfaction des surfaces naturelles. Les villes favorisent un style de vie sédentaire et augmentent le besoin de détente. Le stress ainsi que l’obésité sont les conséquences de cette évolution. Ils nuisent à la santé et augmentent le risque de contracter certaines maladies comme la dépression, le diabète et l’hypertension. De nombreux efforts sont fournis dans les domaines de la médecine préventive et de la promotion de la santé afin de prévenir des maladies et de promouvoir la santé publique. Dans le même temps, les paysages, par exemple les forêts, contribuent à améliorer la qualité de vie d’une grande partie de la population et à atténuer les conséquences des tendances évoquées.
